From a Different Angle #

I have often heard a photographer say of a great photograph, “Oh if I had that guys equipment I could also take great photos.”
I do not believe this is true. I hit the streets for a few hours with a small camera, and while I cannot claim any of these photographs are great, I will concede that they are not too shabby. A lot to do of why they are not bad is; look at things......

Back to the Bushveld. I found this dry river bed, now they are always interesting places to go check out. I got  photographs of some of the wildlife that frequents places like this and then looked at things, from a different angle.
The first photograph is not really from a different angle, but gives you an idea of the terrain. The second one is.

From a Different Angle 18

While wandering around the Grasslands of Mpumalanga, South Africa, I took a day to look at a different type of grass they grow in the area. Wheat. I took a lot of photographs and made an album called Wheatbix, you would have to be a South African to catch the humour. Never mind.
While the landscape photographs were beautiful in their own right, of course I took a few, from a different angle.

 Here is but one.

An overview of the farm.

From a Different Angle 17

Wandering in the grasslands around Badplaas I took hundreds of photos, the place is a nature photographers dream. Birds, flowers, snakes, frogs, breathtaking landscapes and a zillion different types of insect. Those are all standard type photographs, but an abandoned half built house gave me the opportunity to take this, a view… from a different angle.

A discarded piece of rope, not very exciting, but the fact that it looks like the number 7 caught my attention. Another number may not have, but things seem to happen to me in sevens. On the seventh day of the seventh month I entered the Seventh South African Infantry to do basic training. That done I bought an erf, the house I built on it, became number 7 Stork Ave. I lived with a woman for 7 years before we got married, I joined the AA and remained sober, for 7 years…. the list goes on.

From a Different Angle 16

Living in an isolated spot in the bush, most of the photographs I took were of the small animals that visited me. Then one misty morning my damn washing caught my eye and this is the resulting shot.

At another time, waiting for my friend that was having her hair done, pretty bored, I saw this reflection. Now most of my “reflection” shots tend to be of the reflection animals are casting in the water while drinking. Stepped out of the box a little bit here, not even sure I like it.

Staying indoors for the main shot, that was taken in a semi-abandoned factory, these windows provided a whole series of shots which I called: Through Dirty Windows. Some where good enough for stand alone and others I incorporated into some Photo-Art along with other photos from my files.

We will go indoors for a change, a Catholic Church, in the neighborhood caught my attention. Quite a few photographs emerged from this mission and were used to make some Photo-Art.
The pulpit was a very busy, not pleasing to the eye, photograph but I kept it and later made the Dove of Peace for a blog article from it.

Photography 101 - From a Different Angle 11

I thought I would do a  bit of a follow up on yesterdays post. As these posts are merely and introduction to the Club, sometimes they  show far too little of what is actually suppose to come across. In order to give you a better idea of the culvert here is a photograph of the entrance, and the question. Would you wade through the snake and insect infested reeds in order to see what is inside? There is a whole series of photographs that came out of doing just that!

This pipe was a lot easier to use for a photograph.. From a different Angle.

Photography 101 - From a Different Angle 10

Having taken many photographs of the breathtaking beautiful landscape, mountains and river above, I noticed this culvert. Just had to go down there and see things, from a different angle. This is only one of a lot of photographs I took down there.

Perhaps you have had a look at some of my Sunrise Sunsets Series, many were take from just outside this window. One evening I was inside earlier that usual and saw this:

Walking along a river just outside Badplaas I came across the remains of a crab, again it was the colour that caught my eye. The photograph is alright, stand alone, but as I have mentioned, some of my weird photographs end up in a piece of “Photo-Art” I attempt to create. You will find this little guy in the second photograph which I named Reflections.

From a Different Angle 8

Mostly I like to take photographs in the bushveld, lots of small animals are around even when one cannot find something dramatic like an elephant. Sometimes I get stuck in the city, and one can only take so many skyline shots; then I also look for the smaller things there too.

Crates, not the most visually exciting things in the world, I know, but these caught my eye.

One day walking in a particularly ugly part of Gauteng, Malvern East, and walking down a just as ugly street, Jules Street, I was lucky enough not to get mugged and got this shot. The compacted rubbish was on the back of a truck, the colours caught my eye.

While working at a bush camp I made a vegetable garden. Now I did take some photographs of the actual garden and even some of the fruits of my labour but  one day this spray head caught my attention.

Just beyond this fence was a whole herd of Eland, very large antelope, of course I took photographs of them; but I also saw this spider’s web.

From a Different Angle 6

In From a Different Angle 2  and then again 4, I mentioned, “Piece of advice; never delete ANY of your photographs, you may take an interest in photoshop and need them one day.”
I cannot emphasize this enough. Some people, very few now-a-days, may never use photoshop, but as you are reading a blog, you are likely to be writing one, or commenting on one soon. That funny/bad photo you deleted? “Hell, it would have been perfect for…”

The first photo is a closeup of a crocodiles tail, I must admit some of my shots have been a bit risky; but I am still more weary of a hippo than a croc.

I am not sure what I will use this photograph for, but taking my own advice I am going to keep it.

Some of the photos in this series are going to be poor quality, as they were taken with a cell phone camera, and not a very good cell phone at that! We all get those moments when we curse the fact that our camera is not with us. Or living in South Africa, it has been stolen! They are here just to show “looking from a different angle.”
A person can have the best equipment money can buy, and get a high quality, mega pixel, in focus shot every time, no problem.  But then the composition can be lousy, no matter how interesting the subject is, and if the shot is not pleasing to the eye, is a snapshot, nothing more, nothing less.
So you go learn all about composition, the “rule of thirds”, and even take it further and go for the rule of 5ths. Your photographs are now 100% better, but still not THE best.
At Photography 101 we will not only teach you the above, but will show you how to LOOK, first with your own eyes and only then through the view finder. The first photo I admit has been hanging around for years and I found now use for it, until now that is.
The second photo has been used a few times on some sites about the ongoing droughts in parts of South Africa. I still have plans to use it in some photoart when I get the chance.

From a Different Angle 3

Both these photos were taken at a time when I was living in an extremely ugly place and neighborhood.

The first photo was taken in the semi-abandoned factory I was living in. It is one of many that I took and became a part of a collection I called “Though Dirty Windows.”

The second was taken while working on a project with my friend Tanisha, she is a photographic artist who’s work portrays man’s destruction of the environment. We spent a lot of time at one of Johannesburg’s larger dump sites. This lonely boot in the middle of the access road caught my attention.

The Barber Shop sign just caught my eye, but the dead rat I, literally, smelled out. The rat became part of a collaborative piece of art work I did with Tanisha Bhana and was shown in art galleries around the world. Piece of advice; never delete ANY of your photographs, you may take an interest in photoshop and need them one day.
