Penn Fathom FTN25N - R2250.00

Brand New

Stock Item

About The Reel
Brand New Shop Stocked Reel. Never been used. Under Full Manufacturing Guarantee.
Available On Line or in Dolphin Tackle Shop.

The PENN Fathom star drag is lightweight, quick on the retrieve, and extremely castable due to its revolutionary Live Spindle design. The revolutionary Live Spindle design makes the Fathom SD one of the longest casting reels on the market. A Full Metal Body and sideplate keep precise gear alignment under heavy loads, and the powerful HT-100™ drag system will stay smooth from start to finish.
The Fathom Star Drag Reel features the Live Spindle design, which allows the spool to spin independently of the spindle and pinion gear, which significantly reduces friction experienced from the extreme acceleration of the spool when casting.

Paired this reel with a heavy action 7ft Ugly Stik Tiger Lite rod and 50 lb test Spiderwire braid. Landed a 25 pound Bull Red off the pier at Gulf State Park that didn't really test the rod or reel. Next day I hooked up an approximately six foot, 130 pound bull shark that put the rig and me to the test. I broke a sweat but the rod and reel handled the shark easily. Had to max out the drag and really dig in with the rod to turn him when he ran for the pier. The shark pulled well over a hundred yards of line at fairly high drag settings and another forty or fifty yards at max drag when he got spooked at the pier and made another run. Got the shark to the pier for pictures and cut him loose in about ten minutes. The drag was smooth as silk no matter what pressure was put on it. Impressive reel and one of the best reels on the market in that price range IMO. I plan on putting this rod and reel to some heavy use this year. We'll see if they hold up long term.

This thing casts so well! The free spool is amazing. I'll be using this in Baja to cast surface irons and jigs so I went out and practiced at the river and this reel does not disappoint. It's very rugged, not as sleek as some of the nicer reels on the market such as the Avet and Truth reels, but it feels solid in your hand and it outcasts those reels easily. Definitely worth having in your toolbox if you're throwing irons and heavy jigs at large game fish.

The PENN Jigmaster reel has been a longtime favorite among anglers fishing the albacore day boats on the West Coast, as well as kingfish anglers in the Southeast. One of our earliest designs, the Jigmaster features a quick take-apart feature that allows anglers to change spools (and line classes) while on the water when the fish become line and leader shy and the scaling down of tackle is required.

REEL INFO:

Jigmaster - Game fish go for live action lures, so you'll get extra strikes and catches with Jigmaster reels. A unique high gear arrangement and large arbor make these easy casting and fast retrieving reels a joy to use. Precision fitted spools enable Jigmaster reels to handle all lines, including monofilament.(1983 Penn Catalog)

Jigmaster - To hard working saltwater anglers, the Penn general purpose reels, such as the Surfmaster, are as highly valued as mom, apple pie and the good old USA. These reels offer great value and serious features like durable aluminum spools, precision machined gears and Penn's famous HT-100 multi-disc star drag. Perfect for stripers in the surf, cobia off the beaches or albacore, school tuna or yellowtail in the open ocean. (2000 Penn Catalog)

HISTORY:
The 500L was the first Jigmaster designed and manufactured by Penn, and it's also the only Jigmaster still manufactured today. While in 1958 the Jigmaster (then model number 500) came with two light-weight plastic spools by default, metal spools were available as extras. Modern reel comes with an aluminum spool (designated by the "L" in 500L)
500S: This reel has the take apart thumbstud on the side for easy removal of the spool or assess to the gears for servicing.
501: The 501 was identical to the 500 to this model, but had a narrow spool/stand/posts, and is no longer manufactured.
The 505HS was the first Penn conventional reel ever to sport a 5:1 ratio.
The 506HS is the same as but, had a narrow spool/stand/posts.

Take Apart Construction

The term "Take-Apart" refers to the feature of quick and easy take-down of the reel for cleaning or spool change. To effect this, unscrew the knurled take-apart screw ( part TA 200 ) three turns to the left and then pull it outward ( away from plate ), at the same time rotate the right side plate about 1/4 inch to the left ( counter-clockwise ) and pull it away from the reel frame, taking care not to drop the freed spool. To re-assemble, reverse the entire operation, making sure to screw the take-apart screw into the reel frame, as otherwise the right side plate might be lost
